Customer Rating: Summary: Good sound, flaky performance (until a firmware update, perhaps?) Comment: I received my new Squeezebox Radio two days ago, and was initially very pleased. The device feels very solid, the screen is pretty, the setup was easy, and the sound is excellent for its size. I listen to the radio primarily next to my bed, where its sound seems rich, nuanced, and natural. I like the basic functionality a lot.
My problems stem from the firmware. The "now playing" screen often gets stuck on a particular station's artwork, and then does not change even after you've changed the station several times. I've had to reboot the unit to unfreeze the art work. I contacted customer support, and was told that this was known issue and that their developers were working on the problem.
Likewise, I depend on an internet radio to wake me up in the morning with a streamed station. I have several years' experience with the Roku radio, which worked great until a friend blew its speaker. The Squeezebox Radio cannot currently wake up to prolonged stream of a station; instead it just wakes up to a few seconds of the stream, and then stops. I contacted customer support, and was told that this was known issue and that their developers were working on the problem.
Both these issues seem like really basic functionality one would expect from an internet radio with a clock feature. I hold out hope that the next firmware update will fix these fundamental issues, but I don't know how long that may take.
As for the device's design, it functions fine, but it's a little strange to me. Why is the largest dial not the volume dial? (The volume dial is the small dial underneath the larger one, so it's a bit hard to get your hand in there.) The rubber press buttons near the main dial are a little hard to press, too, because the large dial gets in the way of my hand. It's a lot more comfortable to pick up the radio and hold it on my lap to configure it... I would expect a bedside radio to be easily configurable while leaving it on the bedside table. Because these control buttons are all the same size and closely packed next to each other, they are also hard to distinguish by feel in the dark (as is often the case for me, as I often listen at night after I turn out the lights.)
In short, I like the radio's promise, and hope that the developers can fix the glaring firmware weaknesses in short order. I would recommend reading Logitech's community forum to see if the firmware problems are fixed before buying the unit.
Customer Rating: Summary: Less than it could be Comment: I got this as a gift for my wife and have been disappointed because the darn thing worked beautifully for a day and then has been trouble since, to the point where she just says "I'll just put a clock radio in the kitchen." It keeps encountering problems resolving IP addresses and losing presets. Worst of all is the lack of documentation making the other problems that much worse to resolve.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great in Theory Comment: Would be a good product if it ever worked. I regret buying it. Not user friendly, isnt working right now, hardly ever does.
Customer Rating: Summary: love it Comment: This is a great little product. I have it in my studio so I can listen to internet radio and my ipod all from one cute little red box. Great design.
Customer Rating: Summary: Works perfectly Comment: I recently purchased the Squeezebox and it's exceeded my expectations.
I've read other reviews that indicate a difficult setup and inconsistent performance and I have encountered no issues thus far. All I had to do was turn the unit on, setup access to my home network by entering in the WPA password, updated the firmware directly through the squeezebox and registered for a [...] account through the unit...
At my leisure I downloaded the necessary software on my PC to integrate my iTunes library - this was a piece of cake too.
The sound quality is good and the unit is built very sturdy.
One other thing is that if you own a Harmony remote, you should be able to add the Squeezebox to it - I have a Harmony 880 that I purchased about 4 years ago that works like a charm with the radio.
For the price that Amazon has the Squeezebox for, you can't beat it.
